A brand strategy isn’t a logo, a website, or a 30-page PDF collecting digital dust. It’s a living plan that makes your marketing make sense — and if your brand feels off lately, chances are you don’t need a full rebrand… you need an update.
This spring, my garden was a mess.
I mean it. From the outside looking in, it looked like I’d completely lost the plot — beds half-prepped, shovels strewn wherever I’d dropped them, and dandelions. The biggest friggin’ dandelions you’ve ever seen. Three feet tall in some places.
But I didn’t panic about the garden. Because one very unserious Pinterest pin had taught me how to read what the weeds were telling me — if you’ve got this weed, it means that’s missing, add this one thing and it clears up. Suddenly the mess wasn’t a mess. It was information.
If only our brands came with the same cheat sheet, right? Because most people can’t even answer what is a brand strategy in the first place — let alone tell whether theirs is due for an update.
So let’s build that cheat sheet. First we’ll get straight on what a brand strategy actually is. Then I’ll show you how to read your own weeds — because most of the time, the answer to “something feels off” isn’t blow it all up. It’s update the thing you already have.
Let’s clear this up first, because it trips almost everyone up.
Just because you have a website and a logo does not mean you have a brand. A brand is what people experience and understand about you. The logo is not the strategy. The strategy is the plan underneath it.
And when I say brand strategy, I don’t mean a 30-page deck. I can make you one of those — give me a pot of coffee and a Netflix binge and I’ll build out every last thing you could ever need to know about your brand into a Notion dashboard. That’s genuinely useful when you’re starting from scratch.
But you do not need a 20+ page PDF collecting digital dust on your desktop in order to have an effective brand strategy.
In the simplest terms: a brand strategy is a research-backed plan that helps you make effective decisions and content that get you closer to whatever goal you have for your brand.
And here’s the part nobody tells you — the part that changes everything about how you use it: it’s a living, breathing, malleable thing. It’s not a document you finish once and file away. It’s supposed to evolve as your goals change — as you finish one thing and move the finish line to the next. (Because that’s kinda how we’re wired as entrepreneurs.) So the strategy that built your business is not going to be the same strategy that carries you through the pivots that will absolutely come.
Which means “my brand feels off” almost never equals “I need a whole new brand.” Usually it means your strategy is due for an update. Big difference.
Okay. The weeds.
Diagnosing what your brand actually needs is and isn’t as simple as that Pinterest pin at the same time — but there are signs. See how many of these sound like you:
And then nothing sticks. Which doesn’t exactly motivate you to keep going.
If you nodded at even a couple of those — that’s not a sign you need to torch everything and start over. It’s “outgrown, not outdated.” Your business has evolved and your brand strategy just hasn’t caught up yet. Those are weeds. Weeds are fixable.
Here’s where a lot of people get tangled up, so stay with me on this metaphor even though I have no idea why it came to mind.
Picture the best hot dog cart you’ve ever seen. A dozen little metal wells of toppings. Carrot dogs, beef dogs, chili dogs. Anything you could want.
There are two things everyone needs to get started: a bun and a hot dog. In your brand, that’s your messaging and positioning. It’s the bare minimum you need at any given time — in every season, through every pivot. That’s brand strategy.
Then there are the gazillion-and-ten toppings. Those are all the different ways you can market your business — Instagram, your newsletter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, a podcast, whatever. That’s content strategy.
You could try to pile all twelve toppings on one hot dog and not make a huge mess. (Good luck. Also — why?) Instead, you want to choose a few that actually work together, and go enjoy it.
So brand strategy vs content strategy isn’t a competition — one is the hot dog, one is the toppings. And here’s the trap: most people whose brand “feels off” think they have a content problem (need more toppings, more platforms, more posts) when they actually have a positioning problem. No bun. No dog. Just a plate of condiments and a lot of burnout.
More marketing does not fix a strategy problem. It usually just makes you feel worse.
So how often do you need to update this thing? And what even changes when you do?
Not everything moves at the same speed. That’s the piece the tidy Google definition leaves out.
The stuff that mostly stays put — your mission, your vision, your core values. You won’t need to refer to these or rewrite them often, even as you pivot. If anything, they just deepen over time.
The stuff that evolves — this is where updating actually happens:
Notice that not one of those said “burn it down and rebrand.” Positioning is the core of your whole strategy — without it, your messaging, your copy, your content, and your marketing are all kinda effed — and the good news is your positioning is already there. It’s in the words you tell me when I prompt you. It’s just genuinely hard to pull out and define for yourself. (Trust me. It’s hard for me to do it for me — which is exactly why I’ve hired other people to reflect mine back to me.)
Instead of asking “how often should I rewrite my whole brand,” ask: how often does the behind-the-scenes of my strategy need a reset? For most brands, the answer is about once a quarter. That doesn’t mean rewriting your mission and vision. It means looking at what’s working and what’s not, so you can figure out how to shift to hit your goals. That’s it.
Here’s my honest take after doing this with 30+ creative entrepreneurs.
You wouldn’t plant your seeds and then till the bed. Order matters. And a full rebrand, when what you actually needed was a strategy update, is the branding version of tilling on top of your seedlings.
There’s a real cost to blowing it all up: you toss out earned equity, you burn weeks and money, and half the time you land right back in the same spot because the underlying positioning was never the problem you thought it was.
This is what I mean by slow branding — and I know that phrase can sound like slow as in bloated and delayed. It’s the opposite. Slow branding means making the strategic decisions before you spend money on assets, so you get fewer expensive do-overs. Deliberate, not delayed.
You’re not starting over from scratch. You’re making the most of what you’ve already built and integrating one new thing, with a plan for this season.
So before you assume you need a whole new brand: identify your weeds. Figure out what’s actually missing, what to add, and where you need to put a few amendments in. Most of the time, that’s a short-term strategy update for the season you’re in — not a teardown.
Probably — and that’s good news, not bad. (An update is a lot cheaper than a teardown.)
What you more likely need is to read your weeds, find the one thing that’s actually stuck, treat it at the root, and give yourself a plan for this season — not the garden you want ten years from now.
But here’s the honest catch: it’s really hard to diagnose your own weeds when you’re the one standing in the garden every single day. You’re too close to it. That’s not a you-problem — that’s just what happens when your brand is fused to your identity and your income. You end up reinforcing what you already think instead of getting the outside perspective that actually moves you forward.
That’s exactly what a Studio Session is for.
It’s a brand strategy intensive — a 60-minute strategy session plus a custom Notion workspace with every recommendation and next step, built specifically for your one stuck point. Not a 20-page deck destined for the digital dust pile. Structure you can actually play with and implement at your own bandwidth, plus someone (hi, it’s me) who’ll shoot you straight instead of echoing back what’s already in your head.
And you do not need to figure out what’s wrong before you book. Most people can’t fully articulate it yet — they just know something feels off. That’s the whole point. Diagnosing it is literally the job.
Not ready for that yet? Subscribe to Behind The Brand and I’ll send you free brand strategy stuff (weeds included) every week.
And if you read all this and realized your weeds are less “update the strategy” and more “okay, it’s genuinely time to build” — that’s what Brand Brushstrokes and The Signature Site are for.
