There’s a specific kind of spiral that happens when you know your brand needs to change but you’re scared to actually commit. You don’t rebrand your business—you just keep tweaking things. New bio. New profile pic. Palette tweak number four. And somehow nothing ever feels cohesive. You’re putting Band-Aids on a structural problem. The butterfly effect continues—fix one thing, three more things need to change. If are about ready to burn it all down and start over – let me try to convince you to rebrand your business strategically first.
How to rebrand your business strategically, in the right order:
You don’t need to burn down the brand you have now to rebrand your business. Before you touch any colors or fonts, get clear on your brand positioning:
If your positioning is shaky, no amount of pretty design will fix it. This is like trying to paint a house with a crumbling foundation—it might look better for a minute, but the structure is still unstable.
Important note: Before moving to Step 2, you may need to revisit your offers themselves. If your positioning has shifted, your service structure might need to evolve too. Ask yourself: Do my current offers actually serve my newly defined ideal client? Are they priced appropriately for my positioning? Do the names and descriptions make sense anymore?
Sometimes repositioning reveals that you’re offering the wrong things entirely—or that your offers need restructuring to match where your business is now. Don’t skip this step. Your messaging can’t fix an offer that’s misaligned with your positioning.
Once your brand positioning is clear, your messaging needs to reflect it.
This means:
This is where most people jump straight to visual identity updates. Don’t. Get your words right first. Because your design should amplify your message—not try to compensate for unclear positioning.
Now your rebrand and brand identity can do its job: support your positioning and amplify your business’s messaging.
This might mean:
Here’s the key: your visual identity should support your brand’s positioning, not define it.
I worked with Jayne, a copywriter and herbalist who felt her brand was “limiting, standoffish, and dated.” She wanted something that felt fresh and playful while maintaining a wellness vibe.
Her positioning had shifted. She’d moved from serving corporate clients via referrals to positioning as a messaging coach for analytical wellness professionals.
But the key was she wanted to keep her logo & some of her existing colors and fonts. Her visual identity wasn’t inherently bad—it just didn’t match her new positioning and audience.
We kept her existing logo (a simple “J” in her signature orange) and built a new color scheme around it that felt warmer and more approachable.
We added typography that felt less corporate.
And we created custom botanical illustrations inspired by Matisse that reflected both her herbalism background and her new founder-facing positioning.
The result? She got “happy tears” when she saw it. She said the illustrations “perfectly blend my teaching, coaching and marketing with my natural health niche.” But more importantly, her brand finally matched where her business had evolved to—without feeling like a total 180 to her corporate clients during the transition.
If you do need significant changes to either your positioning or visual identity, don’t just disappear for three months and show up with a completely different brand.
Your existing clients and audience need time to adjust. Bring them along:
Jayne did this beautifully. She created a “brand refresh diaries” series on Instagram that documented her process. Her audience got to see the evolution happening, understood the reasons behind it, and felt included instead of confused.
When the full reveal happened, it felt like a natural progression—not a jarring change.

Here’s something nobody tells you about rebranding: sometimes the best creative work happens when you resist the urge to rush it.
You might feel pressure to get it done quickly—to have the “perfect” brand yesterday so you can finally start marketing with confidence. But strategic brand work doesn’t happen on a forced timeline. It happens when it’s ready.
One of my Brand Brushstrokes clients, Ash, captured this perfectly after launching an offer that we had started repositioning together four months earlier.
“THANK YOUUUUU!!!!!!!! Thank you for being a part of this journey with me! The branding we did last Spring is STUNNING and seeing it do the work of expressing my offers is SO FUN!!!! I’m really proud of this; creatively, it was a challenge because there was no rushing it. It came when it was ready and I’m so proud of it!”
“Creatively, it was a challenge because there was no rushing it. It came when it was ready.”
That’s the part most people don’t want to hear. We live in a world of quick fixes and instant transformations. But your brand isn’t a Canva template you can knock out in an afternoon. It’s the strategic foundation of how you show up, attract clients, and communicate your value.
And sometimes? That takes the scenic route.
The brands that feel effortless—the ones where everything just works—weren’t rushed. They were given the space to evolve into what they needed to be.
So if you’re in the middle of repositioning or rebranding and it feels like it’s taking forever? That might actually be a good sign. It means you’re doing the deep work instead of slapping a fresh coat of paint on a shaky foundation.
Trust the process. Take the scenic route. Your brand will be better for it.
